Palm oil represents the main cause of deforestation in Indonesia. Every year an average of 10.000 square kilometers of Indonesia’s rainforests is cleared to make space for new plantations. Despite the promises of big companies to make Palm oil production deforestation-free, in reality data shows deforestation trends have not been slowing down. Indonesia’s economy has come to heavily rely on Palm oil; the country’s exports today account for 45% of the global supply. The destructive consequences of Palm oil production on nature’s biodiversity are today widely known and have garnered high-profile advocacy campaigns and climate activism. However the human consequences - the survival of 280 Indonesian indigenous communities reliant on the rainforest for sustenance - remains little known.
