New Life to an Abandoned Square: When Design and Landscape Architecture Come Together

New Life to an Abandoned Square: When Design and Landscape Architecture Come Together

As part of the 2021 Crossings annual workshop, led by the architectural collectives La Rivoluzione Delle Seppie and Orizzontale, I designed and created a lettering installation to give a strong visual identity to the revitalization of the square.

Crossings is a self-construction workshop led by two architectural collectives. Its aim is to identify unused urban spaces and transform them into community-centered environments through creative interventions. In 2021, the collectives took over Piazza Mercato, a small square near the seaside in the village of Belmonte Calabro. Originally constructed in 2005 to serve as a marketplace, the square was never fully developed or utilized.

In collaboration with the town hall of Belmonte Calabro, the collectives designed a series of infrastructures intended to foster new social interactions. My role was to create a floor painting that would provide the square with a fresh visual identity.
